Everywhere in the village women and children idled apprehensively. Gasto’s news of the battle struck like lightning. Women grabbed bundles packed the night before, done in secret so as not to harm the men’s morale. With children in tow they fled for the sanctuary of friendly houses in other villages. Some sat with resignation. Most wept. All looked at Adalwolf with hostility. He reddened at their unspoken accusation. Gasto sensed his shame.

“Hold your head high, brother. The gods chose you to live. They must intend you to continue to seek retribution, payment for the blood debt.”

“I feel a coward.”

“No! The gods preserved you. The ravens! Then the fog! Had you ever seen anything like that? Since when does fog descend when the sun is at its zenith? The gods will was clear!”

“Explain that to these women.”
